    • Mother’s Day High Tea Flowers

      March 28th, 2018

      25th May, 2018

Blooming Lovely – May Morning Tea.

The giant flowers, were internally lit with mini LED bulbs and used to decorate the photo booths, the main stage, information boards and tables at the event held at Brisbane City Hall.  the Makerspace flowers were greatly admired by all and the Mothers’ Network were very appreciative of the spectacular decorations.

The May Morning Tea is a wonderful annual celebration, where in true Mercy tradition, women from all generations and walks of life, gather to share a cup of tea.  A highlight of the morning was a presentation from inspirational guest speaker and past pupil, Clare Sultmann.  Clare shared her incredible story of faith, determination and resilience.  A wonderful role model to us all.  Here are some of the pictures from the day.

The McAuley Makerspace students have been asked to make decorations for the annual Mother’s Day High Tea, which will be held in the Brisbane City Hall during May.

The girls are very excited about making giant flowers in pink.

First step is cutting out of many petals that will be used to construct a couple of different styles of pink flower.

Construction of the flowers will take place closer to the event.

      Collection of paper beads.

      6th March 2018

The final workshop for term one was paper beads.  All the students that attended were very excited to create some original beads to use in a jewellery project.

      • The first step was to decide on a pattern and colour that would work well when the paper was rolled into an oval or round shape.
      • Step two was to cut the paper into long,  triangular-shaped strips, the longer the strip the more round the shape of the bead.
      • Step 3,  roll the paper strip onto a skewer firmly and

        Finished wired paper bead bracelet.

continue rolling, making sure that the paper is centered, then glue the last 2 inches of the paper at the end to secure.

All the beads were then embossed with clear embossing powder to give them the glass effect.

These beads are more challenging that what they appear.  And this workshop was a test of persistence for some students.  The beauty of a paper bead is that it is easy and quick to start again and learn from doing.

Of course the part the students really looked forward to was creating their jewellery.  Some chose to make a pair of earrings, while others decided on a more challenging bracelet.

    • Macrame Keyrings

      February 15th, 2018

      15th February 2018

The McAuley MakerSpace has been a hive of activity during the first 4 weeks of term.  Students have enjoyed creating paper flowers, pom poms, name badges and this week they are learning the skill of Macrame.

Creating their own key ring out of natural cotton cord or jute and adding a couple of beads to their design.  Some students painted their own beads, others used the coloured beads that we supplied.

Students were helping each other and sharing their knowledge after successfully completing their own key ring.

Next week will be the Kitty Planters, which are made from recycled 2 litre milk bottles.

    • Recycled Plastic Bottle Poppies

      February 13th, 2018

      13th February 2018

Our current workshop is all about upcycling.  The students are creating poppies out of recycled plastic soda bottles.

We are hoping to have a beautiful display for Anzac Day next term, so we are starting to make and collect as many poppies as possible.

The workshop is fun and the students can make their poppy during one lunchtime.

What a lovely way to upcycle plastic bottles.

During week three, the students were introduced to basket weaving.  They were able to choose between raffia, twine and wool. Using different techniques such as coiling and blanket stitch weaving.

It was a very social workshop with the students chatting and collaborating, sometimes not weaving at all.  As a result not all the baskets were finished and students have taken their project home to continue.

We have scheduled week 6 to continue with their project and hopefully finish before the end of term, so watch this space.
