McAuley Author Visit

Students from Junior school were lucky enough to attend workshops with Nicholas Lochel, co author of Zakora, today in the McAuley Library.

Nicholas Lochel grew up in Brisbane, Australia, along with his two brothers and sister, Alison, with whom he is co-writing the ZARKORA series. It was the close bond he shared with his siblings that first inspired the story. He has held a wide variety of jobs over the years, including work as an actor, a bartender and a postie, but his love for stories, and the pursuit of a career as an author, has remained constant throughout. He devotes most of his time to writing, and when he is not seen with a pen and paper or a good book, he can usually be found riding his Triumph motorcycle about town or on some grand adventure.

Nicholas spoke to the girls about the Zarkora series. This series is based on the story of two brothers Neleik and Ervine Fyrelit who witness the kidnapping of their little sister, Skye. Determined to rescue her, the boys travel mysterious lands and face powerful enemies in the hope of finding their little sister.

The girls participated in a collaborative workshop where they created a plot outline for a story. He discussed how to create a world in which the characters reside in.

Steampunk Top Hats

All the top hats are finished now, and we really have a variety of styles. Check them out!

The students have been very busy last week and this week with the last workshop for the term, Steampunk Top Hats.

The girls had to construct their top hat using black cardboard, and then using glitter or plain foam, attached square shapes in a patchwork pattern and embellished their hat with cogs, wire, lace and chain.

The creativity was at an all time high with the girls wanting to try different things and add to their hat. So we have a very interesting collection.

Steampunk is a big hit! Watch this space for all the finished Hats.

Kooky Cone Critters

During the second week back this term, the Makerspace students have been very busy creating Kooky Cone Critters. Using a pine cone for the body and pipe cleaners for some crazy hair effects, the girls are enjoying the challenge of keeping the cones upright as well has a box full of materials that were generously donated to the school. Some students have even created a family of Kooky Cone Creatures.

Foam Sock Puppets

All the Foam Sock Puppets are complete and the students have had a wonderful time creating them. During the following week they are working on a short film starring the puppets within the grounds of the school. I have given them a challenge, encouraging them to use the 360 cameras that we have available in the Library. Take a look at our finished puppets.

The Cre8 Lab has how started the first workshop for term 3.

Because the school is busy with other extra curriculum activities during the beginning of term, the students haven’t had much of a chance to create at lunchtime. So our workshops have been delayed. Yesterday (Monday) was our first day and the students have made great progress with their Puppets, we even have some finished projects already.

The puppets are made from cardboard and foam which creates the mouthpiece, and then covered with a fluffy sock. All the detail is then added with felt, polystyrene balls, and a bit of yarn or feathers, and whatever takes your fancy to give the puppets their own individual character. We have a slightly kooky rabbit, to a crazy vampire in the making.

Makerspace Activities Term 3, 2018

We have an action packed term 3, with great activities for the year 5 and 6 students. Book week will be held in the middle of the term, and the theme this year is “Find your Treasure”, so we have incorporated a Hidden Poetry competition for the students to “find” the poem within the words from a page of a novel. Sphero Maze, Rubber Band Helicopters, and much more. Watch the presentation to see what we have in store.
