Watch the presentation below to see the workshops that are available for our year 7 to 12 students in the Cre8 Lab for term 4. It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of 2020, it has been an interesting and unfamiliar year. Our workshops provide the students with a creative outlet that is valuable for their wellbeing, and gives them a space where they can learn new things that they may not have a chance to do otherwise.
Researchers have found that people report being happy and energized when they are engaged in everyday creative endeavors, and that being in a positive mood goes hand in hand with creative thinking.

During term three the Makerspace and Cre8 Lab students spent the first 4 weeks creating feathers for our wings mural. Each feather was painted in shades of blue and white, cut out in three different sizes and shapes, and then decorated with a white chalk design to add texture, variety and individuality to each feather.
During week 5 all the feathers were collected and then the library staff glued each feather into place on a pair of very large wing shapes. The wing shapes were made out of coreflute materal and then the wings were attached to a black wall using velcro tape.
There are approximately 200 feathers used to complete the wings, and the wing span is 4 metres. Below are a collection of images of the process from start to finish.

Last week the Cre8 Lab hosted a Glitter Heat Transfer workshop. The students were asked to bring in a T Shirt or something that they wanted to decorate. Working in Word, everybody was asked to find or create a image or images and put together a design of something that was special to them. Some of the students decided to add text to their image.
The image was then saved into jpeg format and send to the computer that was attached to the Silhouette Cameo machine. Within this program the students learnt to: re-size, create a cutting line, group, and reverse the image before it was ready to be cut.
After the design was cut, the students had to “weed” the heat transfer vinyl of any parts of the image that was not needed. This proved to be a lengthy task for some, depending on how intricate their design was. The final process was ironing on the design to the T Shirt and then pealing back the plastic film.
Everybody enjoyed the process, and you can see from the smiles that they were happy with their work.

Below is a selection of some of our Autobiographies, Biographies and Memoirs that are available to borrow for the upcoming Year 9 Life Writing assessment, and of course these books are available to all of our students at any time.

McAuley Makerspace is happy to be back up and running for Term 3 this year, after COVID19 restrictions have been lifted in schools across Queensland. The students are working on several activities during the first week, which includes french knitting, feather creation and building with lego.
The feather creation is something that we will keep you posted about. We aim to create a large set of wings and attach it to one of the large walls around the school as a photo mural. This will be a great photo opportunity for all the students in the second half of this term. Also something that can be used for the grade 12 students to capture memories of their final days of school.
