National Simultaneous Storytime 2021

20th May 2021

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centers, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book.

Deputy Director-General for Innovation, Dr Sarah Pearson was in attendance. Sarah has a very long list of amazing achievements some of these are:

  • She has had a significant impact on innovation ecosystems in Australia and overseas and led DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) to build startup ecosystems; empower entrepreneurs in the Indo-Pacific; encourage women in STEM; and engage in economic and commercial diplomacy based on innovation globally.
  • She has published research in the areas of particle physics, medical physics, artificial intelligence, innovation, science communication and science policy, and is an author on eight patents covering cancer diagnosis and confectionery.

The Year 5 students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday 19th May. This year the Year 5 Speech and Drama students along with Mrs Sarah Mitchell enacted the story Give me some space by Philip Bunting. This was followed by Dr Sarah Pearson reading the book, while providing extra information about the planets and space. She then answered the girls questions, even the tricky one “how was the world created?”
