Grandparent/Parent & Significant Adult and Daughter Book Club

On the afternoon of Wednesday 21st August, we once again welcomed our junior school students along with their parents, grandparents and significant adults to the library for our final Year 5/6 Book Club for 2024.

This term, we explored the book The Kindness Project, by author Deborah Abela. Students were treated to a video recording of Deborah answering their questions about the book and the inspiration behind the story, which included her own real-life experiences with the teachers and librarians who shaped her early years.

Students and their special guests participated in a lively Q & A session and wrote thoughtful notes to be placed randomly in library books for other patrons to enjoy, fulfilling their own kindness project.

We are looking forward to inviting new and returning attendees to our book clubs in 2025.

Grandparent/Parent & Significant Adult and Daughter Book Club

On the afternoon of Wednesday 29th May, we once again welcomed our junior school students along with their parents, grandparents and significant adults to the library for our Term 2 Year 5/6 Book Club of 2024.

This term, we explored the book Outlaw Girls, by authors and friends, Emily Gale and Nova Weetman. With horse-riding being an important part of the book, attendees were treated to a special talk from student Addi and her grandmother Janet, who enjoy horses and riding together. They also received a special bookmark from the authors.

Students participated in a lively Q & A session, choosing random questions from wax-sealed envelopes to discuss with their groups, before participating in a special activity where they learned how much addressing a letter has changed since 1881 before addressing their own letters to their special guests.

We are looking forward to inviting new and returning attendees to our next book club in Term 3 to discuss the book The Kindness Project written by Deborah Abela.

Grandparent/Parent and Daughter Book Club

On the afternoon of Wednesday 13th March, we once again welcomed our junior school students along with their parents, grandparents and significant adults to the library for our first Year 5/6 Book Club for 2024.

This term, we explored the book Lani and the Universe, by local Brisbane author Victoria Carless, which follows a young girl as she moves with her mother from the city to an alternative lifestyle and the challenges she faces. Students participated in a Q & A session, choosing random questions to answer with their guest, enabling lively discussions with the rest of their groups.

As the book is about caring for and protecting the environment, attendees finished the afternoon with a fun activity: creating little origami plants with their guests.

We are looking forward to inviting new and returning attendees to our next book club in Term 2 to discuss the book Outlaw Girls written by Emily Gale and Nova Weetman.

Grandparent / Parent and Daughter Book Club

Term 3, 2023

On the afternoon of Wednesday 23rd August, we welcomed a lovely mix of students, parents, grandparents and one very lucky aunt, to the library for our Term 3 Year 5/6 Book Club.

After listening to a summary of our chosen book, Sea Glass by Rebecca Fraser, guests were treated to a relaxing presentation involving a show and tell featuring some real sea glass collected by Library Assistant, Mrs Kate Carey, on a recent trip to Croatia. Students then participated in a Q & A session, choosing random questions to answer with their guest, enabling lively discussions with the rest of their groups.

The highlight of the afternoon was the Memory Book activity, mirroring the storyline of the book, whereby students drew a record of a special memory that they shared with their guest.

We are looking forward to inviting new and returning attendees to our next book club in Term 4 to discuss the book Bindi written by Kirli Saunders and illustrated by David Leffler.

Grandparent / Parent and Daughter Book Club

On the afternoon of Wednesday 17th May, we welcomed over 30 attendees to our first Years 5 and 6 Grandparent / Parent and Daughter Book Club for 2023 in the Potter Library.

Our attendees met in small groups to share their thoughts on the fantastic book, How to be… the New Person by Melbourne writer Anna Branford. The discussions and conversations were lively, and it was great to hear the interesting, insightful, and meaningful perspectives being shared by all of our attendees on the writing, the plot, and the characters of this interesting and engaging book.

We are looking forward to inviting new and returning attendees to our next book club in Term 3 to discuss the book Sea Glass by Rebecca Fraser!
