Oliver, a former primary school teacher and comedian, came and shared his writing secrets with Year 6.
He encouraged them to write about what excites them – the things they love. Drawing a huge hand on the whiteboard, he asked the students to call out ideas, helping them to identify the things they love: a place, food, games, jobs and animals. These were then used to create a story.
His rule is to write down as many ideas as you can, because often, your best idea is not your first idea. Then, once you have identified the things you love, look for things that could go wrong, then times it by two, the crazier the better!
